SENSITIVE BODY SYSTEMS
Not unlike us, dogs and cats may develop food sensitive allergies after successfully eating the same diet for two or more years. Dogs may show symptoms as early as two months, but statistically will show visual symptoms from two to six years of age; cats will normally exhibit symptoms by two years of age. There is little evidence that some breeds may be more susceptible than others, male or female. Symptoms manifest in dermatological signs of itching, scratching, feet licking, redness and hotspots; also gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea will suddenly appear. There is no cure for food allergies, but they can be managed by simply avoiding the offending ingredients in their diet. Normally two to three ingredients will be the"culprit" and of these, the protein source may be the main irritant. A diet with a new single protein and carbohydrate source is a healthy method to try; pets will usually show improvement within four weeks with a new combination diet. The common protein allergens may be beef, pork, poultry, fish, or eggs. Just changing among these proteins may be helpful for a particular sensitivity. Pets may also be sensitive to wheat, rice, corn, soy or yeast. Also, they may be intolerant to dairy or gluten and show gastrointestinal symptoms.
